At least Apple fans are aware of their obession.

If there is a company, product, or brand in the tech space, you can guarantee there are people who stand with it in an almost cult-like fashion. The biggest example of this is just Apple and its legions of fans who identify with the brand and its vision. Or it can be the Crypto people who believe that it is the future of currency, or AR/VR evangelists who claim we will live in a fully digital world. If it is 'tech', then the cult following will follow.

Why do we do this? Well, I mean, it is human nature to find a group and stick with it, especially if that group provides you care and meaning. But we are talking about products and ideas. In a product, people seem to find themselves. It is not a healthy connection, but people wrap their identities in what they buy to better help justify the purchase they made. Or, because people who buy similar products might have similar values on other things too, they form a group. This is a big thing with Apple; it is expensive, so people invest themselves into this large purchase and back it up with Apple's quality and design as justifying points. Then they notice everyone else is kind of saying the same thing about why they got their Apple product, so they start to band together.

With concepts or platforms like AR/VR or Crypto, it's a little different. You are pushing for a new way forward—almost a new level of thinking. You have to believe in your idea; otherwise, it will cease to exist from blowback. This causes a sort of religious movement where you are either in or out, and if you are in, you will defend it because it is now part of your identity. Think how insane people go during Crypto booms and tell me that isn't almost a primal state.

While finding a group is a good thing, I think for something that provides only a purpose to consume in life or is a way to make money for business, we should reel it in a little and think about what we should really be rallying behind: family, friends, religion—things that provide true sustenance for the soul, not money pits to protect.
