I can't take it anymore.

One of my new favorite pastimes, whenever my father is watching a sports game, is to walk in and critique the advertisements in the middle of the game. It's all just to make him laugh, doing voice-overs to make the ads seem more absurd than they are, or just poking fun at the grandiosity of an ad for a pickup truck.

I mean, seriously though, if you have to sit through ads, making fun of them is the only way to tolerate them. I feel as if modern ad campaigns are designed to make you feel like you are the most simple creature on earth, while acting like this product will bring about world peace. Of course, hyperbole in advertising is not lost on me, but I miss when ads at least seemed to be witty.

For instance, here are some of my "hall of fame" ads: the "I'm a Mac" ads and the 2012 M&M Super Bowl commercial. These ads did two important things: they were comedic and witty. For me, that is what I love about an ad. Of course, not everything needs to be comedic; other amazing ads will pull more on empathy or just emotions of sadness, but these still display intelligence.

Not all modern ads are horrible, but I feel like it is getting worse, especially with AI ads. I think ads have gotten lazier because the space to advertise has never been higher. There are ads everywhere and on everything. There is no need to focus on something creative and daring; just put it out there to fill the spot. AI ads make this even worse; they are just going to be a way to output specialized ads at mass scale. If an advertiser knows you like comedic ads and respond to them, it will show you a funny version of its AI ad, whereas if you like somber ads, it will cook up something to make you cry. I don't think this is going to make me want to buy your stuff more.

In my opinion, if an advertisement lacks the ability to be viewed as high quality, then I should probably expect their product to lack that as well. If you make something and are proud of it, you will make it very, very clear that you are proud of it; it will come across in the marketing. But now, I don't know.

Maybe it was a mistake to make everything ad-supported.
